This past August I was a guest on Hipsters Don’t Dance’s Notting Hill Carnival special broadcast on Radar Radio London. Check out my dedication to the past two years I’ve spent at Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival, and the many years previous spent in Toronto, New York, and San Francisco.

I handled mix duties for Teju Cole’s Africa in Your Earbuds mix, so I thought I’d share here! Read his piece, and listen below. It doesn’t really get good until about 1 am, but you do want to be there by then, because you’d like to get in at least two solid hours of dancing by the time the clubs shut down. Afterward you run the gauntlet of cops on Falomo Bridge. “Oga, anything for us?” “Ehn, don’t worry, on […]

My first project to see the light in 2015 is the second in a series of mixtape collaborations as part of Tendai Mararie’s Chimurenga Renaissance project. We released the first one a couple years ago in the midst of my own immersion in the mbira/kondi/kalimba experience as Sorie Kondi was visiting my house in Brooklyn from Sierra Leone. With that mixtape I tried to highlight the mbira’s presence in different musical traditions from around the continent. With mixtape I concentrated more on Zimbabwe specifically, […]

I just got back to Rio after two months in the states, and the DJ side of my life has been busy, so I’m highlighting some of my related activities so interested parties can follow along. This summer I felt lucky to be able to play a range of gigs, from intimate gatherings like John DeLore’s Brooklyn backyard BBQ, or Elida Margarita’s 40th birthday at a downtown Oakland clothing shop; to bigger events like the AfroPunk fest in Brooklyn; and the Que Bajo […]

If you didn’t know by now, I’m in South America at the moment. And this has inspired me a lot to start writing again. Check out my two dispatches from Brazil and Colombia published this past March. Keeping myself busy, I’ve also started a radio show while in Rio. It’s called Africa is a Country Radio, and of course it’s an official partnership with the Africa is a Country Blog. It will be happening once on month Groovalizacion, an online radio […]

This past December I was a guest on Impose Magazine’s weekly radio show Audio Imposition. The hosts Eric and Edwina were really welcoming and enthusiastic about all we got going on over at Dutty Artz. We spoke a lot about the label’s history, and the future of the crew as it moves beyond just music promotion – a soundtrack is included. Listen here: http://www.imposemagazine.com/bytes/chief-boima-on-six-years-of-dutty-artz Eric Phipps also some great photos of a show I played at Webster Hall alongside Old Money, […]
