This past July I had the pleasure of participating in the AfroRazones music gathering in Havana Cuba, organized by Luna Olivarria Gallegos. AfroRazones happened over four days when series of speakers presented to Cuban independent music artists on everything from social media to contracts. I presented on ethics (or lack thereof) in the American music industry, as well as did a 101 overview of copyright so that artists could defend themselves when being approached by foreign collaborators. I also did some technical workshops on mixing and using Ableton for live performances.
Part of the workshop was a collaboration with the international global bass party Hape. The Afrorazones participants from last year presented their songs in a short concert and then I took over DJ duties with Hape resident Landeep for the rest of the night. Hape also brought be to the Eastern part of the island where I DJ’ed the opening night of the Gibara International Film Fest. Cuba is a beautiful island, filled with beautiful people, and I came away with many thoughts and much inspiration. Check out some of the artists from the Guampara music label, the label that hosted the conference in their studios, in the below video:
Vibe Magazine just released on the Cuban Hip Hop scene in general. Check it out here.
