I had a lot of fun playing with the rhythms that underlie the beautiful song “New Name” by Ahmed “Sinkane” Gallab. I met Ahmed a few years ago when we took a trip together to Coachella to DJ one of the side parties in Palm Springs. We talked a lot about our musical influences, and especially how we incorporate our African heritage into our music. Having Sudanese origins, his is a rock influenced take on the musical traditions of the Nile River Basin. And, since it reminded me of some of the great dance music of Ethiopia or someone like Ali Hassan Kuban, I wanted to make sure to highlight those elements in my mix.
That version appears alongside his original, and a version by Busy P of Ed Banger in France on a release by DFA Records. Check it out above and download it wherever available!
