Without Money No Family NY Edition

22 02 2012

African in New York is here! And I’m also proud to present my first every music video, the NY edition of “Without Money No Family.” I shot and edited it myself, taking some footage from the original clip, I’m happy to see the final result but anxious to hear what people think about it.

Buy African in New York as a partial album on iTunes, and at a few other digital retailers. The full album will be a physical version with a special bonus track available sometime soon!

Afro Spectacle Streaming

19 02 2012

The Afro-Spectacle is now streaming online. Listen back to an entertaining evening of collective music video watching. If you missed it the first time, the good news is it looks like we’re going to make this a regular thing.

Afro Spectacle: God’s Own Country

30 01 2012

This Wednesday, DJ Rupture, Lamin Fofana, and Scheme from Old Money and I will be presenting our favorite African music videos culled from the streets of New York, as well as screening Femi Agbayewa’s Nollywood-American hybrid movie God’s Own Country.

This will be part of a series of events held at the Spectacle theater, in conjunction with Rupture’s Mudd Up radio show on WFMU. There’s a 30 person capacity, so come early! If you can’t make it you can listen to us live on the air, or in the show’s archived podcast.

African in New York!

24 01 2012

The release date for my next project, African in New York will be February 21st. The Fader debuted one of the songs from the album yesterday, and it’s up for free download.

The track that they premiered is my remix of Sorie Kondi’s “Without Money, No Family” and coincidentally Sorie’s campaign to raise money to come to SXSW was funded today! (Congrats, and thanks to all!)

Check out the promotional information on the album here.

Sorie Kondi to SXSW

13 01 2012

*Cross-posted at Africa is a Country & Ghetto Bassquake

A small team of folks (including myself) are trying to help raise funds to get Sorie Kondi to SXSW in Austin, Texas this upcoming March. If you’re unfamiliar with Sorie, check out the many profiles done on him c/o Vickie Remoethe BBC, and We Own TV.

His songs, like “Without Money No Family” tell stories of a tough life, so expectedly, Sorie would never be able to afford the ticket to come the U.S. on his own. We’re appealing for help to make it happen. Visit the Kickstarter page to make a donation. He’s got some great incentives up there too!

Also, look out for my own remix of “Without Money No Family” soon on my latest EP, African in NY.

Holidaaaayyyayay-ayayayeah!

15 12 2011

Okay wrong season. But it’s a busy pre-holidays weekend for me in NY before a long break from the cold city. A couple club gigs, and a couple holiday parties including the always fun middle school dance (at the Beacon!). Then I’m headed to the Bay Area for the month of January, so California family see you soon!

Friday night is the regular Dutty Artz Sweat Lodge, this time with everybody’s favorite, prodigal NY DJ Jess Jubilee!

And then on Saturday Jess and I continue our marathon run at SOB’s for the 1st ever, Geko Jones organized Just the Tip of feminism Soundclash. The rules? Women artists only. You too can participate in the warm-up Twitter clash during tomorrow’s #YoutubeDivas hashtag marathon on Twitter!

Lastly, next Tuesday will be the Z’s Holiday party at Zebulon.
